Young Shakespeare Players

The Tempest

For the tenth consecutive year, YSP produces a unique Winter-Spring program full-length Shakespeare play with a rehearsal schedule especially designed for home-schooled Players. YSP once again produces the magical, beautiful story of Prospero, Ariel, Caliban, Miranda, Ferdinand, and the "Men of Sin" who wrongly took over Milan. The Tempest (considered Shakespeare's farewell to the stage) is about redemption and forgiveness  reminding us that "We are such stuff as dreams are made on." Performances: April 25 and 26 at 6 pm; May 2, 3, 4, 9, and 10 at 6 pm; May 11 at 1 pm.

The Shakespeare Circle's King Lear

Two years after the adults staged their first full-length comedy, the Shakespeare Circle undertakes a full-length tragedy: The Tragedy of King Lear. It has been called "the Everest of Shakespeare's achievement.” King Lear is two parallel stories of the old king who gave his kingdom to his cruel elder daughters, and of the Earl of Gloucester who trusted his villainous younger son. It is a play that questions the very heart of who and what humanity is and what our connection is to the heavens, to the natural world, and to one another. It presents some of the finest acting roles in all of Shakespeare: selfless heroes, hideous villains, and a Fool who teaches his king all in the glorious language of Shakespeare at his greatest. Performances: April 12, 13, 17, and 18 at 6 pm.

About YSP

Thank you for your interest in the Young Shakespeare Players (YSP). YSP is a nationally acclaimed program with 25 years experience in bringing together young people to perform full-length Shakespeare plays or, in our workshops, complete scenes from Shakespeare's best loved works. Participants range in age from 7 to 18 years old. There are no "auditions." Anyone of approximately the right age may register and will receive one or more speaking roles.

INTERN AND APPRENTICE DIRECTORS AT YSP

For more than two decades, young intern and apprentice directors have helped create the YSP productions.

These young directors are always veterans of YSP.  They help lead every phase of the productions such as overseeing rehearsals, guiding actors through memorizing goals, scheduling and overseeing run-throughs and special rehearsals, assigning tech roles, and helping dress rehearsals and performances to run smoothly.

Apprentices are usually between 14 and 18 years old, while interns are over 18.
